What is the purpose of G.B.I.M.A. (Glenroy Browne's Integrated Martial Arts)
To simplify and refine and if possible create better strategies for self-defense so that an individual can defend / protect themselves from a resisting opponent.
Does size and strength matter
Not in what we teach, but in your choice of techniques and strategy it does. How you defend yourself will be based on your physical attributes compared to your opponents.
Which is better striking or grappling
Depending on your situation and your physical attributes it is not whether one is better than another but which one is right for right now in the situation you are in.
The purpose of martial arts other than for reasons of fitness, emotional and mental and for some spiritual development is the ability to defend themselves in a crisis situation.
Many clubs and styles have strayed away from a very important point and that is a smaller and weaker person's ability to defend themselves against a much stronger and bigger opponent. Our job is through trial and error with a resisting opponent help a new student accomplish that goal and for an experienced student of the martial arts to increase their options.
Technique Of The Week
Submission in Guard
- From inside your opponents guard.
- Get an over under grip with the hand under the head palm down.
- Then using your shoulder, forearm and head, lock in their jaw line.
- Then drive forward to apply pressure.
This submission can be easily countered if you focus through the pain or start your counter before there is too much pressure, but all counters keep you one step behind my guard pass and the threat of submission is always there no matter what position I end up in.
